In recent years, bao buns have been gaining ground in Greece and more and more restaurants in Athens are adding them to their menus.
They are delicious fluffy Asian steamed buns, filled with sweet or savory ingredients such as chicken, duck, vegetables, etc.
They are usually found in Asian cuisine restaurants, although nowadays there are also places exclusively for bao buns.
Where to eat the best bao buns in Athens? Check out the list below.
The best bao buns in Athens
Thess Bao Athens
Thess Bao Athens (Perikleous 30-32) was the first place I visited for bao buns in the heart of Athens.
It’s worth trying the bao bun with BBQ pancetta, sesame and garlic (dreamy), but also the bao bun with crispy shrimp with panko, spicy mayonnaise and vegetables. A true masterpiece.
They have super filling portions at very good prices.
Noodle Bar
At Noodle Bar (Apollonos 11) you’ll find plenty of Asian dishes, including delicious noodles and soups, but here we’ll talk about bao buns.
Two of my favorite dishes are the bao bun with crispy chicken fillets, lettuce, carrot, scallions & sriracha mayo sauce, and the bao bun with juicy duck fillets, cucumber, carrot, scallions & Peking duck sauce.
Of course, the bao bun with caramelized pork pancetta, purple cabbage, carrot, scallion, cilantro, crispy onion & Korean BBQ sauce is dreamy.
The prices are very affordable, so it’s a nice budget option for dining in Athens.
<Mr Pug’s Canteen
In Halandri, visit Mr Pug’s Canteen (Katsoulieri Street 6) for super bao buns, and churros with sugar and cinnamon.
In the canteen you will find special suggestions, such as bao bun with crispy cod, or the spicy bao bun with spicy beef, cabbage, chili and fried garlic.
Pink Flamingo Dim Sum
Vassilis Kallidis created Pink Flamingo Dim Sum (Skoufou Street 2-4) in the heart of the Greek capital and serves some of the best bao buns in all of Athens!
Must-try dish is the bao bun with roast duck, carrots, ginger mayo, fresh onion and sesame seeds.
Don’t miss the steamed bao with shrimp, pink veganaise, ripe avocado and arugula.
BAOBAE
You’ll find BAOBAE at Leoforos Alimou 27, which offers delicious dishes on a menu signed by chef Christos Glossouidis.
Of course you must try one of the best sellers dishes, the piggy bao bun with braised pork pancetta, cucumber, red pepper, pickle onion, coriander, crispy garlic & BBQ sauce.
If you’re looking for something a little more special, try the exotic bao with white and red cabbage mix salad, pulled duck, mango, crispy garlic & hoisin sauce.
I -of course- vote for crispy chicky bao with white & red cabbage salad mix, pickle cucumber marinated in soy, crispy chicken, sriracha mayo and crispy onion.
If you want to try the best bao bans in Athens, then these places should be on your list.
