Skopelos, the stunning island of the Sporades, is a destination that beautifully combines lush green landscapes with the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean.
It is ideal for those seeking authentic experiences, peaceful corners, and moments of relaxation on breathtaking beaches.
The island became world-famous thanks to the movie Mamma Mia, so especially during the summer months, it is full of life.
Skopelos is an island that blends relaxation, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you want to wander through picturesque alleys, swim in exotic beaches, or discover hidden chapels, Skopelos has something for you.
Transportation in Skopelos
You can reach Skopelos by ferry from Volos or Mantoudi in Evia. The nearest airport is on Skiathos, and from there you can take a ferry to Skopelos.
If you decide to visit Skopelos, it’s highly recommended to have your own vehicle—either a scooter or a car—since reaching most beaches can be tricky by bus.
What to see in Skopelos
Skopelos Town
The island’s capital is a charming mosaic of whitewashed houses with tiled roofs, colorful courtyards, and traditional alleys.
At the top of the town stands the castle, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean. A walk through the narrow streets feels like stepping back in time.

Glossa
On the northwestern side of the island lies Glossa, a traditional village with an authentic island atmosphere.
Narrow cobblestone paths, old mansions, and stunning views toward Skiathos make it the perfect spot for peaceful strolls.

Beaches of Skopelos
Skopelos is famous for its beaches, where lush pine forests meet turquoise waters.
- Hovolo: One of the most unique beaches, with striking white cliffs and turquoise sea.

- Ftelia: A quiet beach, perfect for relaxation away from the crowds. This was my favorite beach—the waters were incredible and the trees reached right down to the shore.

- Kastani: Perhaps the island’s most famous beach, known from the Mamma Mia movie, with a beach bar and a dreamy setting.

- Milia: A long sandy beach surrounded by pine trees, ideal for both families and couples.

- Panormos: A natural bay with crystal waters and many seaside tavernas to choose from.

- Limnonari: A protected bay with calm waters, perfect for those who prefer a peaceful swim.

- Agnontas: A small seaside village, famous for its fish tavernas right by the water.

- Stafylos: One of the closest beaches to Skopelos Town, with golden sand and deep blue waters.

- Glysteri: A beach with a unique character and a beach bar, great for groups of friends.

- Glyfoneri: A small, quiet beach close to town, perfect for a quick swim.

Amarandos Cape
On the southern side of the island, Amarandos Cape stands out with its dramatic pine trees leaning over the rocks and the sparkling blue waters. It’s a peaceful spot and a favorite for photographers.

The Chapel of Agios Ioannis
The most iconic landmark of Skopelos, known worldwide thanks to Mamma Mia. The chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, built atop a rock, offers a breathtaking view of the endless blue. Climbing the 105 steps to reach it is worth every effort.

Where to eat in Skopelos
Anatoli
Perhaps the island’s most famous restaurant, Anatoli is located at the top of the castle in Skopelos Town.

It’s best to book in advance to secure a table.

Personally, I found it a little overrated—the setting and view are amazing, but the food was average, with small portions and slightly higher prices compared to other places. Still, it’s worth visiting at least once for the view.

Skopelitiki Tyropita Michalis
You cannot leave Skopelos without trying the island’s number one traditional dish: the spiral cheese pie (Skopelitiki Tyropita).
Michalis is considered the best place to try it, something you’ll notice from the queue outside. We visited just as it opened and only waited 15 minutes, though we were told the wait can easily exceed half an hour.
We tried one classic cheese pie and one spiral bougatsa. Each cost €6.50 and they were delicious.

Ammos Restaurant
Close to Skopelos port, Ammos has tables overlooking the sea.

We ate here on our last day, and the food was tasty with generous portions. We had pork belly, meatballs, Greek salad, and tzatziki. Prices were quite affordable.

Canteen Omorfenei den pachainei
For something quick and budget-friendly, this street food spot is perfect. Here you’ll find souvlaki sandwiches, pita wraps, and other easy bites like chicken nuggets.

Soya Asian & Mexican Food
If you’re craving something different, Soya in Skopelos Town offers Asian and Mexican dishes.
The space is modern, stylish, and centrally located. We tried tacos, chicken quesadillas, bao buns with fried chicken, and fried shrimp—all were tasty.

Tsokolata
For dessert, Tsokolata is ideal. This small sweet shop in Skopelos Town opens at 6 pm and serves only three handmade desserts: profiterole, galaktoboureko, and Armenovil ice cream.
The Armenovil ice cream is made with meringue and caramelized nuts—simply amazing.

Scoopelaki
If you’re after real ice cream, skip the flashy tourist spots at the port and head to Scoopelaki, a small corner shop hidden in the town’s alleys. It serves delicious homemade ice cream with both classic and creative flavors.

Mouria Fish Tavern
On Agnontas beach, Mouria is a lovely traditional taverna right on the water. We tried anchovies, fried calamari, and shrimp pasta while sitting just a few steps from the sea.

From Skopelos Town, Agnontas is about a 10-minute drive, and since the beach is calm, you can swim before your meal.

Vasiliki Taverna
Located on the beautiful Panormos beach, Vasiliki Taverna is a family-run restaurant with traditional dishes.
It was the first place we ate at on the island, trying feta with honey and sesame, Greek salad, souvlaki, and slow-cooked lamb with oven-baked potatoes.

Iliovasilema (Sunset)
One of my favorite places to eat in Skopelos is Iliovasilema in Glossa. We had zucchini fritters with tzatziki, several meze plates, delicious lamb chops, and pork kontosouvli.

The atmosphere, especially during sunset, is magical. I highly recommend visiting if you’re in Skopelos.
