One of Belgium’s most picturesque and historic cities, Ghent offers visitors a unique combination of medieval charm and modern life. 

With its beautiful canals, impressive churches and medieval castles, Ghent is a destination worth exploring. 

Transportation in Ghent

The nearest airport is in Brussels. From the airport and also the city of Brussels there is a train that takes you directly to Ghent. You can also get to Ghent by bus.

If you arrive in Ghent by train, as I did, once you get out of the station you take the Tram and it will take you to the heart of the city. The ticket costs €2.50 and is valid for one hour.

Saint Michael’s Church

Start your tour with a visit to Saint Michael’s Church, one of the most famous churches in Ghent. 

Built in Gothic style, the church impresses with its architecture and the calm atmosphere inside. Noteworthy are the magnificent carved wooden iconostasis and the captivating stained-glass windows that adorn its walls.

Saint Michael’s Bridge

Saint Michael’s Bridge is one of Ghent’s most famous bridges, connecting the city centre with the old harbour district. 

From the bridge, visitors can enjoy stunning views on both sides of the Lys River and photograph the picturesque buildings and old warehouses that are scattered around the canal.

Korentei, Grasbrug & Graslei

Discover the lovely Korentei and Grasbrug, which are two of the most picturesque spots in Ghent. 

The area around Graslei and Korenlei is full of beautiful 12th and 13th century buildings.

Gravensteen Castle

Gravensteen, the castle of the Counts of Flanders, is one of the most impressive medieval castles in Belgium. 

Built in the 12th century, the castle has been restored and opened to the public, offering a unique experience with exhibits depicting life in the Middle Ages.

Sint-Niklaaskerk

The Sint-Niklaaskerk (St. Nicholas Church) is one of the most impressive churches in Ghent. Built in the 13th century, this church has a Gothic style and impresses with its grandeur and history. 

At the entrance, you’ll notice exquisite sculptural representations and interior stained glass windows that offer luminous images.

The Belfry of Ghent

The Belfry of Ghent is one of the city’s most famous landmarks and one of the largest and most important towers in Flanders. 

The belfry, which dates back to the 14th century, is a UNESCO site and is an excellent example of medieval architecture. From the top, the view of Ghent is stunning, offering an incredible view of the city.

Sint-Baafsplein and Ghent Cathedral  

Sint-Baafsplein is the main square of Ghent and the site of the famous Ghent Cathedral. 

The cathedral is one of the most impressive religious buildings in the city and has stunning Gothic architecture. 

The church is home to the famous work “The Adoration of the Mystery” by Jan van Eyck, one of the most famous works of world art.
