Bled is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful destinations in Slovenia.

Although Bled is a small town that you can easily explore in a day, it offers plenty of memorable experiences that make it well worth visiting. Whether you’re planning a day trip from Ljubljana or staying overnight, here’s everything you need to know about the best things to see and do in Bled.
How to visit Bled from Ljubljana
Bled is located about 55 kilometers from Ljubljana, and the journey takes around one hour.
The easiest way to get there is by bus, as there are frequent daily departures from Ljubljana’s main bus station. The trip is comfortable, affordable, and one of the most popular day trips from the Slovenian capital.
Alternatively, you can travel by train, although the railway station is located about 4 kilometers from Lake Bled, so you’ll need to walk or take a taxi or local bus to reach the lakeshore.
If you’ve rented a car, getting to Bled is very straightforward via the motorway, and you’ll also have the flexibility to explore other beautiful parts of Slovenia.
Another great option is to book a guided day trip from Ljubljana, which usually includes transportation and allows you to enjoy the scenery without worrying about planning the journey yourself.
Bled Castle
Bled Castle is the area’s most famous attraction and the oldest castle in Slovenia. Perched on a steep cliff about 130 meters above the lake, it offers breathtaking panoramic views that you’ll never forget.
The walk up to the castle takes around 10–15 minutes and is fairly steep, but the incredible views from the top make every step worthwhile. Inside the castle, you’ll find a museum, a wine cellar, a traditional printing workshop, a restaurant, and several terraces overlooking Lake Bled and its iconic island.
Admission costs approximately €18 for adults, with discounted tickets available for children, students, and families.
Bled island and the church of the Assumption
The tiny island in the middle of the lake is Bled’s most iconic landmark. It is home to the beautiful Church of the Assumption, which can be reached by climbing the famous 99 stone steps.
To get to the island, you can rent a rowing boat or take one of the traditional wooden pletna boats, which have been part of Bled’s history for centuries.
According to local tradition, if you ring the church bell three times while making a wish, your wish will come true.
Walk around Lake Bled
Even if you don’t visit any attractions, simply walking around Lake Bled is an experience in itself.
The circular lakeside path is approximately 6 kilometers long and takes around an hour and a half to complete. It’s mostly flat, easy to walk, and suitable for visitors of all ages.
Along the way, you’ll come across wooden piers, cafés, small beaches, and countless photo spots. As you continue around the lake, the views of the castle and the island constantly change, offering stunning scenery from every angle.

If you have more time, consider renting a rowing boat or a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) to experience the lake from a different perspective.
During the summer months, many visitors also enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bled.
If you enjoy hiking, don’t miss the viewpoints at Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica, which offer some of the most iconic panoramic views in Slovenia. Although the hikes are relatively short, they are fairly steep, so wearing comfortable walking shoes is recommended.
Try the famous Bled Cream Cake
No trip to Bled is complete without trying the famous Bled Cream Cake (Kremna Rezina).
This iconic local dessert consists of crispy puff pastry, rich vanilla custard, and light whipped cream. Although it’s surprisingly light, it reminded me a lot of a mille-feuille the first time I tasted it.
You’ll find it in almost every café around the lake, but the original recipe was created at Hotel Park, where many locals and visitors still believe you’ll find the very best version.
