THE MOST DELICIOUS CROISSANTS IN ATHENS

Delicious croissants have won our hearts even if they’re not part of Greek cuisine. In savoury or sweet versions, croissants are suitable for brunch, snacks and for all hours of the day.

Most people believe that croissants originate from France, however, Austria is the real country where they originated.

Fortunately, more and more people are beginning to appreciate the value of good croissants and dozens of shops are popping up in Athens with fluffy croissants that you must try.

Which are the best? You’ll find them in the list below.

The best croissants in Athens

Overoll

Overoll is the first place that made the best fluffy croissants in Athens (27 Praxitelous 27).

From the first bite you are transported to Paris, as they really know how to make the right croissant. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with the smell of butter poking your nose.

My favourites are the classic butter croissant, with almond cream and Aegina pistachio cream. If you go in the morning, arm yourself with patience because you’ll definitely find a long queue to order, but it’s more than worth it!

Fika

A little further down from the Acropolis, on Vourvachi Street, you will find Fika, a small corner shop that makes fresh, delicious croissants every day from 5:30 in the morning.

Fika is a Swedish tradition that combines a quick break with a hot drink, like coffee.

You’ll find many sweet and savoury versions, which you can enjoy with your coffee. I tried and recommend without a doubt the almond croissant, the strawberry and peanut puff pastry and the cinnamon rolls.

Don’t miss the burnt cheesecake, a dessert I also tried in Istanbul and loved it.

Kora

Keeping with the Scandinavian vibe, we head to Kolonaki (Anagnostopoulou 44), where Kora is located, a bright yellow shop that personally transported me to the bakeries of Copenhagen thanks to the delicious croissants and the wonderful smell of butter.

The croissant dough is made from scratch in a process that takes up to 72 hours.

I would suggest you try the Cardamom bun with a fluffy cardamom dough and aromatic syrup, and the pain chocolat with Valrhona dark and milk chocolate.

Flaked

A pleasant addition to Nea Smyrni (10 May 2) is Flaked, which you will also find in Moschato (67 Omirou & Makrigianni). There you will find super salty and sweet croissants.

Freshly baked as they should be in original flavours and unique shapes, at Flaked they are made from scratch, using only quality ingredients, offering options for breakfast, brunch, lunch break and snack.

In addition to the all time classic butter and praline, among the desserts stand out the pistacchio and the now viral stuffed supreme, while you will also find a wide variety of savory options, such as croissant carbonara, the hot dog and sandwiches with subversive flavor combinations and much more. Their menu is complemented by special coffee and desserts for every moment of the day.

From the savoury options, I highly recommend the carbonara croissant with mushrooms, bacon and cream. Try it and you’ll remember me!

Queen Bee

At Kolonaki (Patriarchou Joachim 45) you’ll find Queen Bee, with its delicious croissants made with artisan flour and pure Normandy butter, from the hands of famous French baker Kamel Saci.

I suggest you try the butter croissant with almond cream and rum syrup and from the savoury section, the croissant with bechamel, emmental and turkey.

Paul

Paul brings a French air to Athens, as it has 130 years of history behind it, being a branch of its Parisian counterpart.

You’ll find it in the centre of Athens, in Glyfada, Kifissia and Chalandri. It is no accident that this name is a global success.

My favorites there are the classic flavors, butter croissants and chocolate croissants, because sometimes the classic edition is the best.
