Akurala Beach

The beautiful Akurala Beach is the perfect spot in case you want to take the ultimate summer and tropical photo. It’s a quiet beach with no sunbeds and no crowds, golden sand and endless palm trees.

In some places there are palm trees with ropes hanging from them so you can climb up and get perfect photos.

Galle Face

This lush green park in the heart of Colombo by the sea is the perfect spot for photos with the huge skyscrapers around as a backdrop.

Paraliya tsunami memorial statue

The Paraliya tsunami memorial statue is a huge white Buddha statue, a gift from Japan after the deadly earthquake that struck Sri Lanka in 2004.

Located in the centre of a small lake, there are palm trees all around, and to get to the statue you cross a bridge.

Attention. You are not allowed to take pictures with your back turned to the Buddha, as Buddhists consider it an insult. This applies to temples and generally wherever the Buddha is present.

Hikkaduwa beach

Hikkaduwa beach is a super place for photos among beach bars, and there are also spots of plain palm trees. Best time? Sunset, of course!

Pidurangala rock

Climbing Pidurangala rock makes up for it with a great view of Sigiriya rock. It is the best spot you can find for photos.

Tea crops

A special place where you can take perfect photos is the endless green fields where they grow tea. Sri Lanka is famous for Ceylon tea, so there are many tea farms you can visit to take pictures, see after tea production and of course if you want to shop for your tea.

What you need to know about Sri Lanka

  • In Sri Lanka the time is 3:30 hours ahead of Greece.
  • To go from Greece to Sri Lanka you need a passport that does not expire in the next six months and a visa.
  • Mobile data from Greece does not work in Sri Lanka, so I suggest you buy an eSim to get internet and airtime minutes.
  • In Sri Lanka it is too hot! We went in February and it averaged 33-35 degrees with humidity hovering around 60-90% every day.
  • Make sure to bring Euros or Rupees (the Sri Lankan currency) as many places only accept cash. And to do bargaining you also need cash.
  • In Sri Lanka, drivers drive like crazy. The steering wheel is on the right and the roads are upside down, just like in England. So if you’re thinking of renting a car think twice. I personally don’t recommend it though.
  • The best way to get around is by tuk tuk, local buses or a guide who has a schedule set up and takes you to a different place every day.
