OCTOBER 28TH: 7 DESTINATIONS FOR A SHORT EXCURSION IN GREECE

Ζαγοροχώρια - Zagorochoria

October 28th is coming soon and travellers are already packing their bags for a short getaway from the routine of everyday life in Greece (or abroad).

This year, October 28 falls on a Saturday and the coming weekend is a good opportunity for mini getaways. In fact, autumn is the best time to explore the picturesque villages of Greece.

Greece has beautiful places you can choose to organize your trip. Even though many destinations for the weekend are already reaching 100% occupancy, you still have time to book your holiday.

7 destinations in Greece for the 28th of October

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is one of the most popular destinations for October 28, as the big parade takes place there.

Take a stroll along Nea Paralia to enjoy the sun and the skies of Thessaloniki. You can climb up to Ano Polis, and enjoy the view from the Trigonio Tower across the city.

In the evening you can stroll around Ladadika, Ano Ladadika and Valaoritou. Thessaloniki will put you in its own relaxed rhythm. Don’t forget of course to eat bougatsa and Panorama triangles!

Zagorochoria

Zagorochoria is one of the best destinations to visit in autumn. The most famous and popular villages are the big and small Papigo, Aristi, Monodendri and Vitsa.

Explore the beautiful stone villages, see the river Voydomatis and of course don’t miss to eat local pies and fresh sweets. The most beautiful view you will enjoy in the small Papigo, enjoying the Towers of Astraka.

The more adventurous and… sporty types can go hiking and reach the majestic Drakolimni of Tymfi.

Its unique landscape is a strong proof that Greece is a country with beautiful natural places that are not limited to our unique seas and coasts.

You can easily tour the most popular villages in Zagorochoria over the weekend.

Ioannina

Ioannina and Zagorochoria can easily become a combined trip.

Ioannina is a beautiful destination that combines history, delicious food and idyllic settings. Enjoy your coffee by Lake Pamvotida and then take the boat to the island to see the Ali Pasha and Revolutionary Period Museum.

The best dishes you can try are delicious pies, baklava, stifado and frog legs. Of course, whatever food you choose at the taverns in the area will be delicious.

Trikala Korinthias

Just a breath away from Athens you will find the famous Trikala Mountainous Korinthia, which is also a relatively economical destination, considering that accommodation is cheaper than other famous destinations.

Although this is an extremely popular destination during autumn, the three beautiful mountain villages in the area offer a wide variety of dining and entertainment for all budgets.

Trikala Korinthias consists of three districts, Kato Sikonia, Mesia Sikonia and Ano Sikonia, and is the largest village on the eastern side of Zireia. They are located at an altitude of 900 m, 1000 m and 1100 m respectively and are one of the oldest mountain holiday resorts.

Trikala was built on the site of ancient Mysaeus in the 10th century by the lowlanders, who, chased by marauders, climbed up and built villages in a beautiful and healthy place. Trikala was the home of the Notaraeans, powerful rulers of Corinth.

Kalavryta

Kalavryta, a mountainous town in the municipality of Achaia, is located about 2.5 hours from Athens and is just right for an excursion. It’s not so picturesque, after all it was destroyed during the German Occupation, but it has beautiful taverns, sightseeing and of course a ride on the Odontotos is a must.

The serrated road Diakoptos – Kalavryta is a tourist attraction. The train has the ability to “climb” high up the steep slopes of the terrain, through areas of special interest for touring. With a unique route of about an hour starting from Diakopto, the cog railway crosses the Vouraikos gorge, passes through the village of Zachlorou and ends in Kalavryta.

Nafplio

Nafplio is a destination of timeless value, suitable for every season, as it combines the beauty of the sea with the trails of culture and history that are available in almost every corner.

A trademark of Nafplio, Bourtzi, the small island fortress at the entrance of the bay.

To admire the city from above, you have to climb the infamous 999 steps up to Palamidi, which stands on a huge grey rock. The more romantic will be thrilled by a walk along the Akronafplia path overlooking the waters of the Argolic Gulf.

Kalambaka – Meteora

Meteora is a unique destination for the weekend – and beyond – with unparalleled breathtaking beauty. It is a cluster of dark-coloured sandstone cliffs that rise outside Kalambaka in Thessaly, near the first elevations of Pindos and Chassia.

The monasteries of Meteora, built on the tops of some of the rocks, are today the second most important monastic complex in Greece, after Mount Athos. Of the thirty that existed historically, only six are in operation today, and since 1988 they have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The town of Kalambaka is built at the roots of the Meteora cliffs and on the left bank of the Pinios River. In the same place as the present town of Kalambaka, there was the ancient town of Aeginio, which in medieval times was called Stagi.

The word ‘Kalambaka’ is Turkish and means ‘strong fortress’.

Very close to Kalambaka is the archaeological site in the cave of Theopetra, which is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in the country.

For the three days you can stay in Kalambaka, take a walk in Meteora and take a day to visit the beautiful Trikala.
